The heart and soul of Chichijima

The islanders - 1

The best way to enjoy all of what Ogasawara has to offer is to try the different activities with the local guides.

From snorkeling to paddle boarding, without forgetting boat rides and hikes, the locals will tell you everything there is to know about the areas you go to, the species inhabiting them, the History of the islands, and all the fun facts that come to mind and things they notice on the moment.

After days filled with exciting activities, you simply have to go try as many restaurants as you can. You will have the freshest fish, the most delicious veggies, wonderful desserts and even locally brewed craft beer.

All of these places are even better thanks to the owners and staff that run them. Their lively evergy and friendly attitude makes you feel like you've suddenly arrived home on the other side of the world.

The send-off

Picture this.

A few hundred islanders come to the pier to wave goodbye when you board the Ogasawara-Maru back to Tokyo.

Everyone throws their lei in the water to be sure to visit the island again. This is a very important step to the send-off, as it is said that if your lei doesn't reach the harbour, you won't be able to go back. So be sure to throw it fast enough.

As the boat starts to ride away, the people on the pier disappear, but the islanders are still by your side. A few dozens of tiny boats follow the "Ogamaru" as you slowly gather some speed. One by one, the boats stop, the locals wave goodbye, and fade away.

What do they shout? "See you next time!"
